Last week wasn't a good one for the Long County High School softball team. Facing the top two teams in the 2-AA Region, the Blue Tide coaches knew the games would be a good measuring stick to determine the team’s progress.
Although the Blue Tide ladies put forth a valiant effort, they were no match for Jeff Davis and Pierce counties.
Last Thursday, the Yellow Jacket ladies stung the Blue Tide, 13-0, in Hazlehurst. On Tuesday, the Lady Tide hit the road, traveling to Blackshear to take on Pierce County. Unfortunately, for the Blue the outcome wasn't much better as the Lady Bears mauled the Ludowici ladies 10-0.
The Blue Tide was back on the road again yesterday (Sept 11th) as they traveled over to Darien to take on McIntosh County Academy. The Buccaneers brought a 7-9 overall record into the game and a Region 2-AA mark of 1-2. A story on the game will be in an upcoming edition of the Coastal Courier.
The top four teams in the 2-AA Region are Pierce County 4-0 (7-3), Jeff Davis County 3-0 (9-1), Appling County 3-0 (7-7), and Brantley County 1-2 (8-5-1).
The next five are McIntosh County Academy 1-2 (7-9), Charlton County 1-2 (1-9), Long County 1-3 (2-6), Tattnall County 0-2 (3-6) and St. Vincent's Academy 0-3 (0-5).
Long will be back at home this Tuesday, September 16th, when they face Brantley County.
The Herons have scored 76 runs this season and are averaging 5.4 per game. The Blue Tide ladies have struggled to score, as they have only been able to put up 25 runs averaging 3.1 runs a game.
On the defense, Brantley has allowed 40 runs to be scored for a 2.9 run average per game, while Long County has given up 62 for a 7.8 run average per game.
Last year the Herons swept both games from the Long ladies, and this year the Tide will be hoping to give a little payback. That game is at 5:30 PM.
