Though they won't be playing at their newly constructed stadium, the Liberty County Panthers will host the Beach High Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Saturday at Olvey Field. The Panther's overall home record is currently 10-0 and Panther head coach Kirk Warner hopes to continue the streak, especially after a difficult loss to McIntosh last week.
"Anytime you have seven turnovers and two blocked punts," he said recalling last week's offense, "I mean you can't even beat a middle school team with those stats."
The coach said he was pleased with the defense as they held the McIntosh Academy Buccaneers to low yardage. He said the Bucs had only one big play offensively. The rest of the Bucs' points came from the Panthers' turnovers and blocked punts.
"The thing about it was we played in a monsoon and only had one fumble," Warner said of the Panthers' first scrimmage during Tropical Strom Fay. "We are working on the fumbles. So we definitely need to cut down on the turnovers, get a little more physical and go with it."
Warner said he's looking forward to the challenge Beach High presents. It's his first game against the Bulldogs as the Panthers' coach.
The Bulldogs are coming off their first win against Savannah High, 24-16.
Recalling how well his Panther offense played in the rain Aug. 22 at Wayne County, Warner said he didn't mind the possibility of playing through another storm if Hanna makes an appearance.
"Unless Beach cancels, we plan on playing them," he said.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Admission at the gate is $7. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on WOAH 106.3 FM.
