With a girls’ team record of 2-2 and a boys’ record of 3-1 as of Thursday, tennis coach Janet Reddick and her Tiger team seem poised for a good season.
Reddick said all four of her boys played last season and she has eight girls on her squad. She said she expects some good games and sets from returning senior Vincent Wimbush.
For the girls, Brandi Huerd, Stephanie Harrell, Nicole Cooper and Kendra Williams are back from last season.
The coach picked up four other girls who, she said, are relatively new to the game and are learning as the season progresses.
"This is an individual sport," she said. "You want team improvement but you are satisfied in tennis with individual improvements, which I am already seeing in a lot of them."
While others are learning the game, most of her returning players have switched roles from last season.
"Some of our doubles players from last season are stepping up this year to play singles," Reddick said.
While tennis may not have as big a following as football, basketball or soccer, the coach said the benefit of learning tennis can last a lifetime.
"Whether they play competitively anywhere else, I encourage them. If they don’t play in college, then to play in adult leagues. So, they could play tennis for the rest of their lives," she said. "That is one of the main goals -- get them where they are comfortable and love the game."
Reddick thinks Huerd could take the sport to a collegiate level.
"I would like to see Brandi Huerd go off to college somewhere," she said. "She is a dual sport athlete, she plays softball and tennis gives her a dual sport option."
