Last year, former Liberty County High School football player Roderick Jones sat out his inaugural college season as a red shirt freshman. This year, he is again using speed to break away from defenders as an offensive player for the Shorter University Hawks.
On Sunday, Jones scored his first college touchdown, helping his team take down Georgetown, 47-46, in overtime.
Six years ago, during Shorter’s inaugural season, Georgetown pummeled the Hawks 79-6. In their last two outings, Georgetown outscored the Hawks squad 116-8, according to a news report on RN-T.com, the Rome News Tribune’s online edition.
Against Georgetown, Jones had two carries for short gain, but made a 47-yard pass reception in addition to his 8-yard touchdown run. After four games, he is averaging 8.8 yards per carry and 11.8 passing yards, according to stats posted on the university’s athletic website.
Jones said he hurt his knee and will miss this week’s homecoming game against Faulkner, but hopes to play in Tennessee when the Hawks visit Cumberland.
A soft-spoken and humble young man, Jones said, "It felt good scoring my first college touchdown against Georgetown."
