The Walker Middle School Wildcat softball team endured a long, winless season last year. The squad has put the past behind them, however, and last week won their third consecutive game.

The Wildcats have defeated Appling, Brantley and Ware counties by a combined score of 43-6. With the three-game winning streak, the girls ended the season with six wins and an appearance in the playoffs.

"Months of hard work on fundamentals and teamwork have led the team to its most successful season in years. The girls have combined solid defense with timely hitting to finish the region at 5-3," Wildcat head coach Dennis Pattison said.

The coach said that before the season began, Wildcat assistant coach Shawn Peek, who also is the WMS assistant principal, promised the players that if they won five games, he would shave his head.

On Friday, he made good on that pledge as the members of the Wildcat softball squad took turns shaving the coach’s head in front of the entire school.

When they had finished, Peek smiled and praised the team for its outstanding season.

"I want to thank all of these ladies for working so hard during this middle school year and tell them I am very proud of them," he said.

The members of the Wildcat team are Alyssa Anderson, Teresa Chihuahua, Harley Dawson, Madalyne Flynn, Sam Garcia, Hanna Golden, Hannah Gordon, Madisyn Hendley, Emily Hester, Kaylyn McEwin, Natalie Pattison, Taylor Poole, Brittany Smiley, Ashley White and Caitlin Wingate.
