The Long County High School football team travels tonight to Brooklet to take on Southeast Bulloch High School. If the Tide wins, the squad will be 2-0 for only the second time in the program’s 10-year history.
Long County is coming off a 20-7 win over the Bryan County Redskins. During that game, the Tide made a few mistakes, but had a solid outing overall. Head coach Kyle Wilson said if his young and relatively inexperienced team is going to beat the Yellow Jackets tonight, the players will need to pick up where they left off last Friday.
"We have to build off of the mistakes we made last week and not make the same ones," he said. "We also have to have a complete team effort and continue to improve."
Tonight’s contest is the first time the two schools have met on the gridiron, and the Yellow Jackets will be looking to sustain their winning record. Like the Tide, Southeast Bulloch went winless in 2009, but last week defeated Portal High School, 37-12.Both teams appear to have improved their defenses since last year. In 2009, the Tide and the Yellow Jackets both gave up an average of 42 points a game, but in last week’s games, Long County allowed only 7 and the Jackets gave up 12.
This week, the Tide will need to be careful to avoid turnovers.
Regarding last week’s victory, Wilson said he was pleased with the team effort. He also was happy with sophomore quarterback Jacob Turner’s performance. In the game, Turner had three touchdown passes and 184 yards in the air.
"Jacob did well last week," the coach said. "We found a few plays that worked really good and he made the plays he needed to make most of the time."
Tonight’s game in Brooklet is at 7:30.
