The Long County High School football team snapped an 11- game losing streak Friday with a 20-7 win over Bryan County High School. The streak began in 2008.
After the game, Blue Tide head coach Kyle Wilson said, "It felt great to get the win. It was a big relief. The team was ecstatic and I think they were relieved, too, to know that another winless year was out the window."
A few new faces dotted the sidelines as the game pitted first-year Bryan County head coach Mark Wilson against new Long County defensive coordinator Mitch Nobles. Early on, it looked like Wilson had an edge. The Redskins jumped out to a 7-0 lead. But Nobles’ tough 50-front defense bore down on the visiting Bryan team, which did not score again.
Kyle Wilson commented on his defense’s performance. "They did what they were taught to do. When they (Bryan County) tried to run the ball, they tried to punish the ball carrier. They (the Blue Tide) bought into the system and just played well," Wilson said.
After falling behind early, the Blue Tide scored 20 unanswered points with touchdown receptions by sophomore Luke Golden in the first quarter, juniors Jermaine Gibbs in the second quarter and Johnnae Jones in the fourth quarter. Sophomore quarterback Jacob Turner threw three touchdowns and was 12-17 with 184 yards all night.
"Jacob played well," Kyle Wilson said. "He made some young mistakes, but overall, he looked like a veteran out there and was solid."
The coach said he also was pleased with the offensive performance. "The offense did a god job. Our game plan was pretty basic and we found a few plays that worked really well for us. Overall, they were very effective out there," he said
The coach also commented on the entire team’s performance, saying the players hustled all night and didn’t make many mistakes.
This Friday, the 1-0 Blue Tide travel to Brooklet to face Southeast Bulloch High School. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 37-12 win over the Portal Panthers so the game should be a good one.
