Long County High School took on the Tattnall County High School Battle Creek Warriors on Friday and suffered a 55-28 loss. The Warriors brought a 3-1 record into the game and used the Tide’s roster of banged up players to their advantage.
On Tattnall's third possession of the game, they drove from their own 40-yard line, using a power running attack. The Warriors put seven points on the board seven minutes into the first period.
Tattnall County tried for an onside kick, but the ploy backfired and the Blue Tide fell on the ball with good field position near their 40-yard line. Wide receiver Stevie Harrison led the drive and later made two big catches. Quarterback Jake Durham hit slot receiver Justin Boyd for a touchdown. Miguel Hernandez booted the extra point to even up the score.
The Warriors got the ball back, drove to the Blue Tide three-yard line and faced a fourth and goal call. The Tattnall County coaches decided to go for a touchdown, planning a hand-off to their tailback.  As the running back hit the hole, the Blue Tide hit the runner causing the ball to fly into the air, in what appeared to be a fumble.  But according to the referee, the ball had already crossed the goal line, giving the Warriors the lead again.
The Blue Tide got the ball, but couldn't keep it, fumbling to the visitors. Taking advantage of the short field, the Warriors once again drove for a touchdown, taking the score to 21-7 in their favor with about nine minutes left in the half.
Long County got the ball again and began their drive. Facing a third and three situation, the Tide's offensive line exhibited discipline, and Durham sounded out the hard count to pull the defense offside and got a first down. On the same drive, a 33-yard reception by wide out Ricky Rivera put the ball at the Tattnall six-yard line. Durham hit Boyd again in the end zone. After the PAT, the Tide narrowed the score to 21-14.
The Warriors explosive offense suddenly appeared unstoppable, scoring on their next two possessions to go up 35-14 with about three minutes left in the first half.
Displaying perseverance,  Dur-ham hit Rivera for an 11-yard score with just 13 seconds left in the half, bringing the score to 35-21 in the Warriors’ favor.
During the second half, turnovers by the Tide, injuries and a depth shortage on the bench were evident as the Warriors wore down the home team. Durham and Rivera hooked up for another score but it wasn't enough and at the final buzzer, the score was Tattnall County 55, Long County 28.
For the night, playing "heads-up" defense for the Blue Tide, were defensive backs Robert Goslee and Shane White, who both had fumble recoveries during the game.  However, the Blue Tide team, as a whole, had four turnovers in the game, 2 interceptions and 2 fumbles lost.
After the game, LCHS Head Coach Kyle Wilson said, "We are going to keep doing what we have to do to find the wins; there are still wins out there for us, we just have to take them".
The Blue Tide's record dropped to 1-4 with the loss, and they are still looking for that first 2-AA Region win, as they now sit at 0-4 in the region.
If the team is going to get that first win, it won't be easy this week as they travel to Folkston to take on Charlton County.  The Indians have a record of 4-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of Appling County just two weeks ago.
That game will be this Friday, and it starts at 7:30 PM.
