Kicking the boys soccer program into action, the First Presbyterian Christian Academy Highlander soccer team won all three games at a tournament last weekend in LaGrange.
FPCA coach Tom Sukaratana said the first game against Georgia Christian was a nail-biter that ended in three sudden-death rounds of overtime. The Highlanders won 4-3.
The coach said his team was leading 2-1 when he substituted for his starting goalkeeper.
"I had to try my backup keeper and by doing that it cost us two goals," he said. Sukaratana said FPCA trailed by 1 when a Highlander scored a goal with two seconds left in regulation.
"The referee counted the goal and we went to a shootout," the coach said.
He said his keeper blocked the first two kicks, "but then my two seniors missed their penalty kicks," he said. "We ended up tying and went to sudden death and in the third sudden death my keeper, Jeremy Webster, kicked in the winning kick."
The next morning, the boys played LaGrange and the coach said FPCA controlled the entire game and won 6-3.
In game three, the Highlanders took on region opponent Calvary Christian from Columbus. FPCA won 2-0.
The coach said he has a talented squad, but many young players. There are three seniors on this year’s team, nine freshmen, seven sophomores and several juniors. Sukaratana said he has high expectations for the season.
The Highlanders host John Milledge Academy tonight and Georgia Christian and Providence on Saturday.
