The Long County High School softball team kicked of its season Tuesday on a high note. The Lady Tide defeated cross-county rival Wayne County 5-4.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the game through the seventh inning, holding onto a 4-0 lead. But the Lady Tide never quit. The squad came back and scored five unanswered runs to earn the victory.
"We loaded the bases and things just happened for us. We got a few base hits, and they made a costly error" Tide head coach Jenny Alfirov said.
Even with the win, the coach said there are plenty of areas in which improvement is needed.
"I am extremely pleased with the win, but we have many areas that need to be improved upon," she said.
Blue Tide Athletic Director Karen Swindell also was happy about the outcome of the game. "It was a great win for our softball program," she said. "Wayne County is usually the top region contender in AAAA. Most of their girls play traveling ball year round. This was the first time ever that we have played Wayne County in softball, and to come out with a win, it was impressive … I am very proud of the way our girls fought through some adversity to come back and take the win."
The Lady Tide (1-0) take on the Lady Jackets (0-1) again Aug. 16 in Jesup. The game begins at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Tide softball players are:
Alejandra Chihuahua, Silvia Chihuahua, Shelby Mock, Kelby Manning, Kimber Sapp, Kayla Mills, Miranda Taylor, Ashley Murphy, Brittany Hall, Rachel Woodard, Audrey Hulvey, Amber Wilson, Erica Golden and Taylor Harrison.
